While our philanthropic focus at Columbia is outdoor education and conservation, we are also a member of the global community and dedicated to being a responsible neighbor. The following examples illustrate innovative partnerships on a local, regional, and global level.
Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP)
Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP) brings the healing power of art to children in crisis and their families with a mobile team of teaching artists working in Portland's children's hospitals. CHAP has created art classes tailored to the needs of the children we serve in our partner facilities: Doernbecher Children's Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children. In 2009, CHAP worked with over 10,000 children and their families.
Columbia Sportswear is proud to support this dynamic organization through the donation of apparel, product samples, fabric, employee volunteer hours, and other resources allowing these children an art experience that engages and inspires — where children can be seen for their artistic talents and not for their diseases, diagnoses or disabilities. We helped CHAP pioneer a dynamic initiative where our donation of sample clothing was transformed into CHAP Happy Art Wear raising critical funding for the program. This pilot program has since inspired other local apparel manufacturers to join the effort. Learn more »
Big City Mountaineers — Try On Campaign
Big City Mountaineers (BCM) uses wilderness expeditions to impact the lives of under-served urban teens. Mentoring provided by community-based youth organizations and adult volunteers help the young people with improving their integrity, self-esteem, responsibility, decision making, and communication skills. Serving close to 1,000 youth annually, BCM has improved young peoples’ lives with reduction in violence and drug use while increasing their likeliness to stay in school.
Columbia has been a long-term partner with BCM because of our shared commitment to getting kids outside. This Fall we are excited to partner with BCM through our unique Try Columbia and Introduce Urban Teens to the Outdoors initiative. A $5 donation will be made to BCM when consumers simply “Try On” a pair of Columbia Sportswear shoes at select retail stores (no purchase necessary). This donation will directly support BCM and their endeavor to provide wilderness opportunities to under-resourced teens while instilling self-awareness and personal responsibility. Learn more »
